2 January a.k.a Science Fiction Day and my favourite Sci-Fi Authors, movies and TV shows #geekdom

The acclaimed author, Isaac Asimov (known as the ‘Father of Science Fiction’ was allegedly born on the 2nd of January 1920.  Although Science Fiction Day isn’t an official holiday, it is the perfect opportunity to honor this genre.

Wikipedia defines Science fiction as: “(often shortened to sci-fi or scifi) is a genre of speculative fiction, typically dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life.

Being an undercover (or not-so-undercover) geek, I am a big fan of sci-fi books, movies and TV shows.

Here are a few favourites:

Fav Sci-Fi Authors

(In no particular order)  Frank Herbert, George Orwell, Orson Scott Card, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, etc.  As you can see, I prefer the çlassics – but I am actually very keen to discover some new and contemporary science-fiction authors.  Any recommendations welcome!

Fav Sci-Fi Movies

Star Trek Movies – all of ’em!  Can’t imagine a future without Spock!  Star Wars – yes, you CAN be a Trekkie and a Star Wars fan!  Alien, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe, District 9, The 5th Element (Gary Oldman is such an underrated actor – one of my favourite favourites), Back to the Future, Total Recall  – okay, the list can get VERY long!

Fav Sci-Fi Series

Dr Who!  X-Files, Star Trek – especially the Original Series, and The Next Generation (had a weird crush on Data when I was a teenager!  Don’t ask). V – the orginal series, my favourite show as a youngster! Firefly, Quantum Leap, Stargate SG-1, Fringe, Falling Skies, Heroes, Under the Dome, Futurama 🙂 And some!

So, share your favourites!  The best way to celebrate #ScienceFictionDay by watching your favourite movie/series.  We will be watching “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe”and have the Star Trek reboots lined up as well.  Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan.  Say no more.

Live long and prosper!

PS:  I purposefully left out the ‘superhero’aspect, because I see it as a seperate genre/subgenre.
